The Lacey F.C. has officially adopted the Pocket Gopher as its mascot, said Troy Kirby, club president.

“We looked high and low for a great mascot to identify with, and fortunately/unfortunately, we found the pocket gopher digging up our back yard, so we figured it was a sign,” Kirby said.

The Lacey Pocket Gophers F.C. will begin play in 2018 as inaugural members of the Western Washington Premier League as an amateur adult men’s soccer team led by former S.P.S.C.C. coach Chris Crowe.

“I am excited to be part of this new soccer program here in Lacey,” Crowe said. “I have loved the game of soccer my whole life, both playing and coaching it. I look forward to the challenges that my coaching staff and I have in front of us. I also look forward to working with this great ownership group, and their focus on building a successful semi-pro soccer team, here in Thurston County, that local families can come to see and enjoy. Let’s Gopher-it!”

The first of 5 home matches for the Pocket Gophers will be April 28, 2018 at North Thurston High School’s South Sound Stadium.

“Our goal is to be one of the most exciting teams in the region, but also put on a great entertainment experience for those in the Thurston County area on a Saturday night.”

Kirby said that the team will seek out names for the Pocket Gopher mascot at a later date through fan polling of its supporters group, known as “The Invasive Species,” as it will do for its kit and scarf design.

“Our fan supporters will be valuable to us as we build this team,” Kirby said. “We fully expect to have our fans select the type of design of our scarfs and kit, in an effect to ensure that they feel ownership over our team’s efforts on the pitch.”
